Homemade Teddy Bears

Making a Teddy Bear can be a rewarding experience. Craft shops sell kits, which are ideal for beginners and contain all the materials you will need as well as step-by-step instructions. For the more adventurous or as a next step creating a unique bear can be a challenge and allows you to personalize the bear to your tastes or as a gift for someone else.

The first step is choosing a design. How big do you want the bear to be? What features do you want your bear to have? It is worth taking your time looking at the wealth of designs available online. If you have the skill, you can just use these to provide inspiration for your own design, but for beginners, I recommend using a tried and tested design.

Once you have a design, you can buy the material necessary to create your bear. This will greatly affect the look and quality of the teddy bear so you will want to buy the best materials that you can afford. Once again suppliers can be found online but a visit to a specialty craft shop will be worthwhile as nothing will tell you more about the quality of the fabric than actually feeling it. Remember to buy spare material as these can be used if you make a mistake later on. The extra fabric can also be stored and used to repair the bear later on in its life when those particular materials may be hard to come by.

If this is your first foray making a homemade teddy bear, be sure to follow the instructions or template carefully. Cutting the material into the various pieces that will make up you bear is a crucial point in the bear making process. Cutting carefully will make sure that your completed bear will be perfect. Sewing can be done in a variety of ways from by hand to using a machine. Do whichever is most comfortable for you. Take extra care in the areas where stitching can be clearly seen.

Adding the face, especially the eyes, brings the bear to life. Hand sewing is almost always necessary for the face as this is delicate work and will determine the bears expression and character. Don’t skimp on the face. Take your time and please do not just stick a button or some felt on the bear’s face for his eyes. These have no personality and can become a problem for a small child who might choke on them if he pulls them off.

Once the bear is almost complete, leave a small hole large enough to insert the stuffing. Stuffing should be packed fairly tightly and pushed to the extremities first ensuring an even distribution. Feeling the bear all over will ensure you get the right feel. Finally sew up the remaining section to complete your bear and Enjoy!

Another sweet touch to making homemade teddy bears is making little outfits for the bears. If you can make a bear, you can probably make the clothes too. Another very special idea is to dress the bear in your child’s baby clothes. If the bear is a gift, you might ask the parents for an outfit that will complete the teddy bear. Whatever you do, this homemade teddy bear will be a treasure the child will have forever.
