Background Teddy Bears
Teddy Bears first appeared 106 years ago in 1902 making them a relatively new addition to playtimes compared to other traditional toys. Named after the 26th United States President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt after enterprising Brooklyn shop keeper Morris Michtom created and named 2 stuffed toy bears made by his wife who called them Teddy’s Bears. The name teddy bears was perfect after an incident in which the President refused to shoot a tethered bear during a hunting trip. The Bears were very popular and the Ideal Novelty and Toy Corporation was started as demand for them grew and is still in production today. The name has never changed. Why should it; it’s perfect.
A German soft toy factory run by seamstress Margarete Steiff added a soft, plush bear to their catalogue. They were introduced at the 1903 Leipzig Fair. An American buyer immediately imported 3000 of them. They were an immediate hit being exported to America and the UK, becoming the latest toy craze. Early Steiff bears are now valuable collectors’ items and if in good condition can fetch lots of money.
After the Second World Wars, technological advancement meant traditional manufacturers were threatened by the cheap mass-produced bears imported from the Far East. Even though they are more expensive, traditionally made bears have remained popular due to their quality craftsmanship and nostalgic value. Bears, old and new, are now as popular as ever, and no child’s toy collection is complete without one.
Famous bears from Children’s Television and Movies include, Baloo (Jungle Book), Sooty, Super Ted, Yogi, Fozzy bear from the Muppets and the Care bears as well as bears from Children’s literature. Teddies have played a huge part in children’s literature and are the stars of much loved classics such as A. A. Milnes’ Winnie the Pooh, Paddington Bear and Rupert. Bears have also fronted many charities and act as Mascots for a wide range of organizations, particularly children’s charities. Some of the most popular are Pudsey from Children in Need and Smokey the Bear, the mascot for the Forest Fire Prevention Campaign.
There is just something about a teddy bear. They are so life-like and cuddly. No matter how tattered, a child’s teddy bear becomes, it will always be precious to the child. Some children become so attached that they can’t go to sleep without cuddling their best friend Teddy the bear.
